Making Ear Candles

Ear candles are a natural therapy for problems of ear wax blockage and other ear and sinus congestion, and are a wonderful alternative to having your ears syringed. As the candle is burning at one end, this creates an updraught which gently draws out secretions and blockages. They also assist in balancing the fluids and pressure in the ear and this can help reduce pain, headaches and nausea stemming from imbalances.

Firstly cut the amount of parrafin wax that you will need, put in in a pot, and submerge this in a pan with a little hot water. Leave on the heat until the wax melts. You will need to keep repeating this stage as the wax quickly sets again and will need reheating.

Next take strips of cotton sheet and put them in the pot of melted wax, poking down with a stick, to make sure all the cotton is covered in hot wax. You will need one strip per ear candle and can only do the measurements through trial and error.

Take the wax soaked cotton strip and start winding up a piece of wood which looks like a drum stick but is bigger. You can make these from an old broom handle and taper the end. Keep wrapping until the end.

Smooth down over the ear candle making sure all areas are connected and there are no gaps. Now this is the tricky bit. Try turning gently the other direction to loosen the candle off the stick. Oh yes remember to oil the stick in between making each candle and also to let your hands cool down as this is a hot job.
